I shot this picture in one magical moment when the clouds cracked and the Fingers of God reached down to touch Doug McConnell in full beast mode on his route Orbital Drift (32/8b+) in the Grampians, Australia.
I was hoping for one of the beautiful Grampians’ trade-mark sunsets which bathes everything in red but for the whole day the light had been flat and it sucked the sculptured contours and briliant colour out of the rock architecture.
Towards the end of the day, I jumared a fixed line to take a few shots. I tried a few different angles but nothing really worked when the sun broke through the grey and illuminated the scene in layers of perfect light. It lasted just a brief moment though and it was gone as quickly as it came.
